Writing Assignment 1:
Dorothea Lange contrast Pentti Sammallahti:

Compare two photographs within the Dorothea Lange exhibition with two photographs of the artist that Berger discusses in Chapter 1 of Shape of a Pocket; Pentti Sammallahti (4 photos total). You will need to research Sammallahti and find images that create an interesting comparison to Lange's photo from the Oakland Art Museum Exhibition. Images of Dorothea Lange’s that are not in the exhibition will not be accepted as viable comparisons.
Essays should focus on visible similarities between the subjects portrayed,  as well as the medium of black and white photography. These comments and observations should be based on visual concepts such as composition, contrast, lighting, perspective, etc. Essays should also include the visible differences between the two artists photographs in terms of light, composition and overall feeling or reception of the images.

Objective: Comparative Analysis. To develop a vocabulary built from observations that discusses
the subjects in photographs and the context in which these images are developed and received. This vocabulary should be able to address the contrast and brightness of an image, how this effects the composition and space within an image, as well as the overall reception of its meaning.

400 word minimum. Essays are to be posted on a blog site that you create on blogspot.com.  Blog pages should include
1.     Comparative essay
2.     4 Images discussed from both artists
3.     All info and web addresses of selected images.

The Kingdom / Room 1

In this Assignment students will work together in small groups to curate an Art Exhibition. First you will collectively select a theme that unifies the artworks in your exhibition. Then you will design an exhibition from the images and presentations that I have been showing in class as well as any other artworks we have seen in galleries or museums. You should arrange the images and their documentary information in a sequence that would reflect how someone might navigate through the gallery, similar to a catalogue of the exhibition.

Below is an example that I organized into three separate "rooms". I selected the theme "The Kingdom" and draw upon the thesis of how animals and our relationships with them have contributed  to the development of visual language as well as physically effecting numerous techniques and materials of several different media and artistic processes.

The Kingdom / Room 3

"In each of these pictures there is at least one dog. That's clear and it might not be no more than a gimmick. Yet in fact the dogs offer a key for opening a door. No, a gate - for here everything is outside, outside and beyond"

In Berger's earlier book About Looking he dedicates one chapter to animals and our relationship to them throughout the development of human civilization. Many historians agree that it was our relationship to the dog that brought us of out of the Paleolithic Age and into the Neolithic age. It was our acceptance into the pack that assisted in developing community amongst our own species.

The human role within the Animal Kingdom has traversed a complicated and complex path. Gradually escalating ourselves above our planetary relatives and neighbors through first a cohesive and integrated relationship of agriculture and animal husbandry, and then through the Industrial Revolution’s territorial progress and development, the Kingdom has shifted from a ecological system that caters to one species alone, leaving the other creatures and ‘members’ of this kingdom to exist within the margins of man-made environments (National Parks & Zoos, Industrialized Farming, etc.). As their ‘natural’ world shrinks our development of compartmentalized environments grows at a rapidly increasing rate, and along with it the excess residue of such environments.
